“I just want people to take a step back, take a deep breath and actually look at something with a different perspective.”— Brian McKnight
Several years ago, while I was an educator, I noticed that a usually lively student was quite sad and withdrawn. I did not tell him anything, but later, after school, I sent him a message asking him if everything was fine. He told me:
Sir, life is very sad. There is no hope. I see no way.
I asked him what was wrong and why he was thinking like this. He said that his girlfriend had left him, and now all was dark, and he thought everything was over.
I asked him when he met the girl. He replied that it was three months ago. I then asked him how he had been faring before that. He said that life was good, that everything was working wonderfully.
I asked him his age. He told me he was sixteen or seventeen, if I remember well. I told him that all these years he had been enjoying life, and now, because of just three months, he would forget all that. I told him he could surely go through other experiences as wonderful as those he had before these three months.
He said to me:
Thank you, sir. You have changed my mind. Yes, these three months cannot erase all these years.
This shift in perspective changed his state, and he saw things from a better angle. Once, in class, he said that I had saved his life.
This story shows clearly that perspective is crucial. If we are looking at things from an acute angle, we can become discouraged and sad.
A change in perspective can change our life. Be willing to look at things from different points of view and lean toward those that bring you peace and greater well-being.
“Sometimes the best thing to do is to take a step back and get a little bit of a different perspective and re-evaluate things.”—Austin Aries
